Off the Broom – “Outies” win first bonspiel in Kincardine
There is something new and exciting this year for our Junior curlers. Five towns have joined forces to form the Grey Bruce Minor League of Curling. Organizers of this new league include Peter Newton of the Kincardine Curling Club, who is also the coach. Teams will travel to various towns to compete. The first games were held here in Kincardine in November, with the curlers travelling to Markdale mid-month. Both Kincardine teams won their first games. There is always room in our regular Sunday Junior league for more kids to come and learn the game of curling.
The first bonspiel of the year was our annual “Innies versus Outies.” This eight-team fun spiel pits curlers from in town against those from out of town. Out-of-town curlers are mainly from Point Clark, Tiverton and surrounding areas. This year, the Outies came out victorious once again, winning the illustrious Golden Shoe trophy. Thanks to all who helped to make this a great way to kick off the curling season.

The BrokerLink Insurance Grey Bruce Major Curling League is under way again with Kincardine hosting seven other towns here in late November. This was the second game of the league with Kincardine going in with a 1-and-0 record. Unfortunately, Les Shane and his team of Peter Newton, Jim Roberts, Derek Regier and Tim Church, were soundly defeated in their second game, losing to Steve Gregg of Paisley. This league plays weekly but no further reports on past games are available.
There was a foursome from Kincardine who travelled to Forrest in mid-October to take part in the “Swing and Sweep,” which combines golf and curling. Apparently, this is a very popular event and, of course, you can host such a thing only if you have ice in your club that early.
The first session of curling is quickly drawing to an end. Session two will begin Dec. 16, and run until February. There are spaces available for a variety of draws. There is a new draw happening Friday evenings, beginning Jan. 2, 2025. It is a Pay-as-you-Play social evening. Also new, beginning Dec. 18, is a Wednesday morning jitney which will run for both remaining sessions. If you are interested in joining either of these two new draws or our regular sessions, visit

The men’s bonspiel will be held Jan. 4, 2025. There are three six-end games. Teams can register on-line at
www.kincardinecurlingclub.ca under events. This is always a great spiel so get those entries in soon.
