Huron United Football Club bounces back with 2-0 victory over Suspects FC
A strong second half from the Huron United Football Club sealed a 2-0 win over Suspects FC of Kitchener in the Tri-City Men's Soccer League match-up July 15. The performance earned praise from the coaching staff as a return to form after a lacklustre defeat the week prior.

Both squads were careful and deliberate in the opening minutes which was a welcome departure from the wildly-eventful first half in last week's match against Simba FC. Huron United winger Andrew Wiegersma rifled an early chance just over the bar after a tidy passing sequence with Cam Fletcher and Gerrit Satosek.

Huron United overcame some lapses in passing accuracy – thanks in no small part to a joint diving challenge by keeper Josh Coleman and fullback Charlie Hall-Elwood – to reassert control for the balance of the first half. Co-ordinated pressure and timely take-aways yielded near misses for leading scorer Adam Carty, winger Drew Cobean, and co-captain Jacob Hunsburger.

Huron United nearly struck first minutes into the second half, after fullback Angus Sharpe created a chance at the top of the 18-yard box, A. Carty beat the keeper with a well-placed ball to the bottom right -corner that just clanked off the post.

The breakthrough for Huron United came in the 58th minute. A sequence of lateral passing, involving Sharpe, Flynn Colwell-Castles, and Riley Cherrett, ultimately gave A. Carty space in the box – a dangerous proposition for Suspects FC. Carty sidestepped his mark and expertly slotted the opening marker into the bottom corner.

Huron United continued to drive possession, and fleetingly appeared to pad its lead on a header from co-captain Satosek off a characteristically-accurate cross from Ryan Schriek, but a foul call in the build-up took the goal off the board. Wiegersma made it 2-0 for real in the 77th minute with a convincing strike after a through ball from Hunsburger gave him space behind the Suspects’ backline.

Wiegersma nearly got exposed in coverage shortly after his goal, but a timely shriek from Schriek on the bench alerted him to the open man in time, and Wiegersma’s hustle helped Coleman preserve a well-earned clean sheet.

Sharpe, A. Carty, and centre-back Shady Dahrouj split Man of the Match honours for their stand-out performances, with a wide range of players drawing votes.

The win brings Huron United's record to 4-2-2 on the season, and preserves midfielder Cam Fletcher's personal undefeated streak.

The Huron United FC, based out of Saugeen Shores United Football Club, continues its TMSL campaign against Oriental Reserves FC, Tuesday, July 22, at Spinrite Field, Listowel. The squad features players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas. For team updates, visit kdslsoccer.com.
