Bruce County Public Library launches early literacy program to mark Family Literacy Day
In celebration of Family Literacy Day, the Bruce County Public Library is launching its re-imagined early literacy program, Read and Play Every Day. This free reading program helps parents nurture their child’s early literacy development from birth to age five.

The program encourages families to create strong reading habits through daily reading and play-based activities. It is flexible and designed to fit naturally into family routines and features five age-based reading challenges that grow with a child’s development. This allows families to choose the stage that best suits their child’s age and literacy.

Participants earn points by reading together and completing simple, age-appropriate activities based on five early literacy practices: read, write, talk, sing, and play. Families track their progress using the Beanstack app, which allows them to earn points, badges, and incentives, such as colouring books, Play-Doh, and much more as they move through the program.

“Preparing children to read begins long before they enter school," said Jeremy Clark, the public library's digital initiative co-ordinator. "Read and Play Every Day supports families in building strong language skills. By reading, talking, singing, playing, and writing together, caregivers help lay the foundation for life-long learning and school success."

The annual celebration of Family Literacy Day in Canada highlights the importance of reading and learning together as a family. The public library supports families through programs that concentrate on early literacy and school readiness.

Families can register for Read and Play Every Day through Beanstack or by visiting their local public library branch.
