The Kincardine District Secondary School Alumni team may have won the game against the current KDSS boys hockey team, by a score of 10-6, Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Davidson Centre, but the boys hockey team came out the real winner as the game was part of a successful fund-raiser in support of the team's trip to Europe in April.
A good crowd enjoyed the hockey game, as well as the entertainment by Tony and the Islanders and Ryan "The Buzzman" Berry in the Kincardine Hall, and the extensive items up for bid at the silent auction.
The KDSS boys hockey team is taking part in a European Hockey Tour from April 8-16, in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. There are 17 players and 11 adults going on the trip, including coaches Doug Kennedy and Peter Wolfe.
"Peter (Wolfe) and I have been working on this for a couple of years," said Kennedy. "Other hockey teams have gone on this tour, including the Grey-Bruce Midget AAA team that went last year."
The hockey tour is organized by Moore Sports Tours of Toronto which supplies a bus driver, tour guide and translator for the trip. The team is guaranteed a minimum of four exhibition hockey games against local teams carefully selected to provide enjoyable, competitive games.
Cost is about $3,500 per person which is why a committee has been working so hard to fund-raise, through a bottle drive in early January, raffle tickets, and the hockey game and silent auction.
"We hope to raise between one-half and two-thirds of the cost," said Kennedy.
During the hockey game, retired KDSS teacher Jim Taylor scored a "highlight" goal for the Alumni team. Announcer Ryan "The Buzzman" Berry called it "the greatest goal of the game." Meanwhile, suiting up for the KDSS boys hockey team, were teachers Dan Ogilvie and Keith Colley.
"It was a great day for KDSS hockey," said Wolfe," taking a stroll down memory lane with the Alumni who were there, as well as supporting the current team's trip to Europe. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the event, as well as the many people and businesses who donated items for the silent auction."
