Purple Grove news

What a busy time is spring! With all the planting, haying, farming, ball games, school musicals, and events on the weekend, it certainly keeps you hopping to get around to most of them!

Last weekend, saw the first of Cheesecake and Tacos Fest in the area and it sounds as if it was a fun time.

The Kingsbridge Community presented "The Great Storm" over the past two weekends to full-house audiences, and a fantastic performance by all the actors about the storm of Nov. 9, 1913.

The Kincardine Community Singers' spring concert was another wonderful time with the theme "Friendship," and entertained huge audiences over the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances.

Thank you to all those involved in the preparation and delivery of this excellent entertainment!

Visiting recently with friends and family in the area, were Bruce and Deb Aitken of Burke's Falls, and Roger and Wendy Smith of Olds, Alberta.

Jim and Fran Farrell attended and enjoyed "The Little Mermaid Jr." production at Egremont Community School in which their granddaughters, Danica and Clara, were participating last week.

Congratulations to Joseph Bridge on his graduation from Kindergarten! Congratulations to all our graduates from university, college, high school and public school, and best wishes to Tracy Hallam on her retirement from teaching! Wishing all our students have a wonderful summer and may it be filled with great adventures and a lot of fun!

June is a very popular month for birthdays so belated Happy Birthday wishes to Murray Lotton, Katherine MacInnes, Elaine Pollock, Kim Stephen, Todd Thompson, Barb Strang, Susan Cliffe, Sheena Houghten, Daryl Murray, Stosh Cubberley, Cathy Cubberley, Dawson Colling who is seven, Betty Cook who celebrated her 85th birthday, and to Dennis Bridge on his 75th birthday!

Congratulations to Dayna and Tyler Van Dyke on the birth of Hailey, a little sister for Cole and Callie, and another granddaughter for Don and Dianne Simpson!

Happy Wedding Anniversary to Ferne and Wes Abell, Jamie and Crystal Farrell, and Rob and Krista MacInnes this week!

We are saddened to learn of the death of Mike Hunter of Huron Township and extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Mike was passionate about farming and dedicated his life to participating and supporting many organizations in our community. We also remember Herman Weller of Durham, formerly of Ripley, and keep his family in our thoughts and prayers. Herman and Berta moved from Germany in 1980 with their family and his mother to a farm east of Ripley and became friends to many of our community. We certainly appreciate these special people and their influence on our lives.

Our thoughts and prayers are with many in the community who are in hospital and home recovering, we miss seeing you out and about.

Bren de Leeuw, past-president of the Bruce District Women's Institute, and Fran Farrell, Federated Women's Institute of Ontario (FWIO) board representative for Bruce, Grey and Simcoe, both of the Purple Grove W.I. branch, attended the charter meeting of the Ladies of Saugeen Women’s Institute that brought together more than 20 women from the Saugeen Shores area. It was an excellent session with lots of discussion and excitement and we are overjoyed as this brand new branch moves forward! Ellen Waye, Grey-Bruce Area president, helped chair this inaugural event. Ellen and Betty Anne Thompson, Bruce District president, are both of the Bervie W.I. branch. Michelle Phillippi, past-president of the FWIO, and a member of the Eden Grove-Cargill W.I. branch, was also in attendance. All of the guests brought greetings and well wishes from all levels of the W.I. as well as several area branches. Bren, Fran, Ellen, Betty Anne and Michelle enjoyed a lovely luncheon afterwards in Port Elgin.

Bren and Fran dropped in to say hello to Henry and Jackie Pope in Port Elgin this week.

The Purple Grove W.I.'s summer adventure this year will be to Southampton, Thursday, July 30. We look forward to spending time with fellow W.I. members and friends and to seeing the play, “Murder at Ackerton Manor,” at the Bruce County Playhouse. If you would like more information, send an E-mail message to purplegrovewi@gmail.com or call Bren at 519-396-6521.

The Purple Grove W.I. programming meeting will take place Monday, June 29, at 7 pm at the home of Marilyn Reid. If you have any topic ideas or guest speakers that you would like to see in our 2026-27 schedule, please let us know!

RIPLEY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

Last week, our fall fair ambassadors visited the classes at Ripley-Huron Community School to hand out seed packages along with a list of junior exhibit entry options for this year’s fair. This is a friendly reminder to get your seeds planted — we can’t wait to see the creative exhibits you bring to the fair! A special thank you to Pollock Electric for generously providing the seeds for all the students and helping encourage participation in this year’s fair!

Thank you to Community Foundation Grey Bruce for supporting our project. The funding for new exhibit hall tables will help accommodate growing participation at our fall fair and community events. We greatly value your continued support of our community.

Stop in at Pollock Electric to grab your fall fair T-shirts! While you are there, pick up a koozie in support of our pledge to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation campaign. Thank you for supporting local and giving back to our community!

The design by Grade 5 student Paisley Farrell will be showcased on the front cover of the 2026 Homecraft Exhibit Book. Her prize will be a midway wristband for the fall fair.
