Off The Broom - Kincardine Curling Club news
The ladies bonspiel, with the theme “Beauty Pageant,” was held Saturday at the Kincardine Curling Club. Unfortunately, it was not filled but the 48 women on 12 teams enjoyed a day of fun, fellowship and curling.
The early draw winners were led by Heather Struthers, with Janis Blackwell, Carolyn Norman and Dawn Zettel. Second place was the Seaforth team of Bev Sale, Linda Kistner, Carolanne Doig and Barb Weston. Their last game ended up in a tie and a draw to the button was needed to declare the winner. Bev managed to bite a good portion of the button for the win.
Barb Kester, Anne Burton, Shelley Henderson and Jennifer White skipped the remaining teams on that draw.
The Goderich team of Vicki Culbert, Brenda Parker, Cathy Murdock and Donna Adams took top honours in the late draw. They were followed by the Elmira team of Jen Lawrie with Jennifer Bernard, Jodi Riel and Sheri Douglas.
The other teams were headed up by Andrea Turcotte (Kincardine), Cathy Alcombrack (Ripley), Jackie Nesbitt (Ripley) and Shelley Sakula (Midland).
Several of the teams participated in the runway walk while dressed for the swim suit and evening gown competitions. Winners of the beauty pageant were the Jenn White team (as The Donald and his ladies) and Jackie Nesbitt's team which sported some very creative swim suits. The ladies received a lovely prize package Bruce Telecom.
Honorable mention goes to Andrea Turcotte’s team. Their sashes read Miss Demeanor (a police officer), Miss daBroom, and Miss B Haved. Thanks to Mark and Carole Anne Nagus for convening this spiel and to all our great sponsors.

This past month has been a busy one for many of our local curlers, starting with our annual men’s bonspiel which was another dandy event, as always. The fellows who curl in the OFL (Old Folks League) surprised a lot of the young bucks by taking home first, third and fourth prizes between the two draws.
Finishing first in the early draw was one of those teams, comprised of Peter Kirkpatrick, Jim Roberts, Glyn Pinkney and Brian Berg. Second place was the foursome of Craig and Reg Milburn, Sam Turcotte and Derek Fagan. Late draw winners were the Mark McFadyen team from the Toronto area, and second place went to JD Matheson, Chris Farrell, Scott Kester and Gary Moulton.
The Grey Bruce Senior Men’s bonspiels have been in full swing for some time now. Various towns in the area host these bonspiels almost on a weekly basis, usually Wednesdays. Two of the most recent ones were held in Walkerton and Port Elgin. There were two teams that travelled to Walkerton to compete: Gene Gillespie, Bob Urie, Jim Roberts and Mark Luckhardt were on the early draw, while Peter Kirkpatrick, Art Doughty, Ron Harris and Bob Harvey played in the late one. Port Elgin had the team of Gene Gillespie, Glyn Pinkney, Jim Roberts and Mark Luckhardt participating.
The Hanover ladies bonspiel was held at the beginning of February. Shelley Henderson, Beth Mimnagh and Barb Ross needed to “borrow” a curler from Hanover due to their fourth player becoming ill. Jan Fleming filled out the team and they ended up placing third in the late draw. The ladies came back with some homemade baking as a prize. Very yummy!
Lots of people were very disappointed that the Ontario men’s and ladies' provincial playdowns, leading to the Brier and Scotties Tournament of Hearts, were not being televised by TSN, Sportsnet or Rogers, which have shown them in previous years. Games were only available on pay-per-view. This is the first time that the two events have been combined and it would have been great to be able to watch those games. Several club members have plans to attend the Scotties which begins Feb. 18 in St. Catharines and I’m sure many will be cheering for Team Ontario led by Rachel Homan.
There are still a few spots open for the March 4 mixed spiel with a Mardi Gras theme. Contact Erin Simmons or sign up at the club now. You don’t want to be disappointed!
