The Ripley Wolves have prevailed in a hard-fought, seven-game battle with the Milverton 4-Wheel Drives.
The Wolves took Game 7, by a score of 5-2, at home Tuesday night (March 24), and will now face Shallow Lake in the ‘A’ final beginning this weekend.
Game 1 goes Friday, March 27, at 8:30 p.m. in Shallow Lake, with Game 2 Saturday night in the Wolf Den (Ripley Arena) at 7:30 p.m.
The rest of the series has yet to be determined, as this is the final weekend for ice in Shallow Lake. Expect Game 3 to be in Owen Sound, while Ripley’s ice will stay in for the duration of the final.
Tuesday night was another chippy affair in a series that developed a lot of bad blood as it progressed, which is somewhat surprising seeing as the North and South Division teams haven’t played each other in years so there’s no history between the players. But, between trips to the penalty box for both teams, there was some good hockey being played, and the first ended in a 2-2 tie.
Goalie Kurt Edwards was great in Ripley’s net, stopping 15 shots in the first and 27 on the night to preserve the lead his teammates gained in the middle frame and never relinquished.
Scoring for Ripley in the first were: Brett Catto and Jordan Cale (powerplay), with assists going to Drew Davidson, Tyler McCarthy, Brian Stanley and Travis VanGaver.
McCarthy scored the eventual game-winner in the second on the powerplay, followed by an insurance goal by Paul Stewart before the frame was finished. Cody Britton assisted on both goals, while Cale and Davidson had the other assists. Edwards stopped seven shots in the third and Jeremy McQuillin added an empty-netter to solidify the win and a spot in the final.
