Montgomery Ford Midget girls compete in year-end WOAA league playoffs

The Kincardine Montgomery Ford Midget girls "C team is winding down its season.

The team went to Walkerton Thursday for an exhibition game against the Walkerton girls "B" team, to warm up for the big weekend ahead. The girls worked on practices over March break and this paid off with a 3-0 win in Walkerton.

This past weekend was a big event for the Midget girls, competing in their year-end WOAA league playoffs. The league has 15 Midget girls teams which are divided into three categories. From Kincardine, there is a Midget House League team, coached by Keith Battler, and the Midget "C" team, coached by Gord Kemp.

The tournament took place in Tara and Chatsworth arenas. There were five House League teams, six Intermediate "C" teams, and four Elite "B" teams. The Ford girls were in this final category, with all their games played in Chatsworth.

The first match was Saturday morning against the Bruce Peninsula "B" team. The tournament had a unique point-scoring system, a team acquired two points for a win, one for a tie, and a point was awarded per period won. With this in mind, each period counted for a point!

The Kincardine girls played a fast and controlled game, out-shooting Bruce Peninsula, 2-1, and even scoring a goal in the third period which was called off because the net was kicked off.
The game ended up in a scoreless tie, giving the Kincardine Kinucks two-and-a-half points.

The second game was Saturday afternoon against the Walkerton "B" team. This was a must-win to stay alive and, needless to say, all cylinders were firing!
The Kinucks confidently won, 5-0, and almost had a perfect game, yet there was one period was a tie, so the team acquired four-and-a-half points out of a possible five.

The 3rd game on Saturday was against the Markdale "B" team. This team has a perfect record in the WOAA - undefeated.
The Kinucks gave Markdale a run for its money, keeping the game close for the first and second period. However, a quick break-away by Markdale in the third changed the game and the Ford girls took a 52- loss. They did win the second period for one point this game

Unfortunately, the Kinucks did not acquire enough points to advance to the final on Sunday, which was between Markdale and Bruce Peninsula.

The way the Ford girls played this weekend was a good test and warm-up for the provincial playdown weekend coming up April 10 in Oakville. The team is competing in the Midget "C" division, with 16 teams all winning their own playdown series from all over the province.

Goal-scorers on the weekend, were Megan Stewart-Kemp with and and Ashley McConnell scoring the rest of the six-goal weekend. Thanks also to Emma Swift of the Bantam team for playing up with the Midgets to help as the team was missing defensive players.
