KDSS girls rugby team tours Pittsburgh

The Kincardine District Secondary School girls rugby team travelled to Pittsburgh on the April 17 weekend for three days of rugby.

Friday night began with a clinic led by two-time national champions Pittsburgh Angels coach, Tony Chappie. The skills developed at this clinic were vital to the girls winning the first game of the season, on Saturday, against Kiski Area High School, 42-5.

Victoria Krulicki, Katie Franklin, Kara Colhoun and Jada Ellis, playing in front of a large fan club, scored two tries a piece with Colhoun adding one conversion. Krulicki, playing in her first-ever game, won Player of the Game honours. Following the match, the Kiski and KDSS players enjoyed each other’s company and watched the Angels go on to beat Cleveland.

After enjoying an evening of Pirates baseball, KDSS travelled to Moon Area High School for a Sunday showdown.
The Knights started on the back foot and quickly found themselves down, 19-0, before Danielle McBride stole a scrum and Franklin scored, to finish out the half.

Ashley McConnell led the forwards through the second half with big runs and impressive tackles. Brooke Walker controlled the very fast Moon wingers with tracking try saving hits.
Playing her first game at scrum half, Franklin continued her scoring touch adding two more tries, while Krulicki ran the length of the field twice adding three more tries to her season total. McConnell added one conversion as the Knights came from behind to win an exciting game, 32-24. Tony Chappie chose Franklin as Player of the Game.

The tour was organized by senior player Delaney Dundas, teacher Cati VanVeen, and coaches Dan Oglivie and Keith Colley.

A heartfelt thank you to the sponsors for their generous donations: the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), Kincardine Lions Club, Kincardine Legion, Ripley and District Lions Club, Tiverton Lions Club and Colhoun Chiropractic.
