The Kincardine Bantam Kinucks defeated Walkerton, 4-3, Saturday night, following the official opening of the Kincardine Silver Stick hockey tournament.
Members of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band marched into the Davidson Centre arena, leading tournament director Ray Luinstra and Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie, who addressed the crowd of spectators and the two Bantam teams.
"On behalf of the Kincardine Minor Hockey Association, I welcome all the participants, team officials, parents and hockey fans to the 28th annual Kincardine Regional Silver Stick tournament," said Luinstra. "I thank all the volunteers who are helping out with this event, especially the organizing committee members: Eric Fohkens, Jim Thorpe, Heather Boettinger and Derrick Burrows."
He also thanked former tournament director Lyle Brock who was of huge assistance.
"This year, we have 53 teams from all over southwestern Ontario competing for six divisional championships," said Luinstra. The divisions include Novice "B" and "C", Peewee "B" and "C", and Bantam "B" and "C".
"To all of you who have the privilege of participating, I sincerely hope you enjoy your time at the Silver Stick tournament and trust it will leave many lasting memories," said Luinstra. "Embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that is at the core of the Silver Stick, and enjoy the great game of hockey!"
Eadie welcomed everyone to the Municipality of Kincardine, and gave special thanks to Luinstra and his committee.
She recalled one member of the committee, Burrows, who served on the tournament committee years ago when her sons were playing hockey.
"We are proud to have this long-standing hockey event in Kincardine during the Christmas holidays," said Eadie. "It's a lot of work to organize a four-day tournament in three different arenas. To the players, you are in for some great competition. Do your best and you may just end up going to the International Silver Stick tournament.
"To the visitors, I hope you will consider coming here at another time of year when our municipality offers beautiful beaches, as well as fishing, trails and even surfing."
The Kincardine Bantams then went on to face Walkerton which opened the scoring late in the first on the powerplay. Jacob Bishop tied things up for Kincardine midway in the second, and by the end of the middle frame, the Kinucks had scored again to take a 2-1 lead.
The two teams traded goals and by the end of the game, Kincardine had edged Walkerton, 4-3.
The round-robin action continued Sunday and into Monday, followed by quarter-finals and semi-finals. The finals run Tuesday.
